The Film 'Together' Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Might Make or Break Your Romantic Bond.

Here's a challenge for partners in committed relationships who enjoy horror films: Get comfortable with your loved one and view Together. The independent film success of 2025 recently had its launch on a streaming platform on Hulu. Outwardly, it might appear like standard body horror, but beneath Together resides a deep examination about our choices in loving one another.

A Directorial Debut Exploring Partnership Complexities

Together marks the first full-length movie for director Michael Shanks. It stars Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have remained a couple for a decade. Having wed in real life in 2017, the two stars contribute a unique chemistry to their characters, masterfully depicting both the strengths and weaknesses of a committed partnership.

The narrative begins when the couple transition from the big city to the country for Millie’s job. A somewhat stereotypical story element, sure, but that’s largely where the tropes end. Together becomes as much a psychological exploration of the pair’s relationship as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While walking near their new home, a violent storm occurs, and the protagonists tumble into an subterranean cavern. After being trapped overnight there and eventually escaping, a supernatural entity starts to affect the couple. This force induces a paranormal intimacy between them that goes far beyond simple connection.

The whole movie is a methodically building horror experience, interspersing elements of dreamlike terrors, disturbing (but tastefully done) physical transformations, and authentically humorous exchanges (sometimes during something grotesque). Michael Shanks orchestrates these parts expertly and presents them in a gradually swelling atmosphere of fear.

Complex Characterizations

A significant portion of Together is solely Brie and Franco, and they deftly portray manifold depths to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Millie’s confidence and feeling of intimacy is suffering due to a distance. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his unwillingness to focus on anything other than his floundering music career inexorably rises.

Tim, on the other hand experiences isolation and separated by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve moved to the country and far away from his support system. He dreads the idea of utterly sacrificing his sense of self in another person. This fear is amplified by the fact he lacks a driver's license and relies on Millie for mobility.

The director's cleverest decision in this movie avoids making one partner or the other the clear bad guy.

The couple face the kind of problems that arise in most partnerships a decade in. At their core, they still love each other. They still laugh together, comfort one another, and open up at times. But below this facade, there’s an unavoidable feeling of questioning about their future together.

Allegory and Meaning

While the otherworldly presence in Together act as a metaphor for these concerns of excessive reliance and giving oneself over to a partner, the metaphor never feels clumsy or self-important. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments provide a perfect parallel to the character-driven drama. Both the supernatural and the personal serve the other symbiotically.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s conclusion, which won’t be spoiled here, has left audiences divided on the story's concluding statement about enmeshed dynamics. Accounts suggest that single viewers have interpreted the film as a compelling reason for avoiding commitment. Meanwhile, a few pairs having disagreements found that the film ultimately assisted them make up.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own response could act as a telling indicator of how you perceive partnership. Will the ending inspire a sense of discomfort and fear, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you recognize your own traits in either protagonist and feel frustration, or simply glance toward your partner and say, “I’d do that for you”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an experiment you can experience right now.

Together is streaming on Hulu's platform now.
