Balloons carrying thousands of packs of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was required to halt operations for hours when dozens of them floated into the airspace of Lithuania.
Air Travel Interruptions
The temporary shutdown led to thirty canceled flights disrupting thousands of passengers, with authorities cautioning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Officials confirmed that 25 meteorological balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two of which ending up precisely above the airport's airspace.
As many as 14 of the weather balloons launched over the weekend floated over the metropolitan zone, which is the location of Lithuania's capital city and near the frontier with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
At least 11 balloons transporting numerous containers of illegal tobacco products have since been recovered, though additional discoveries are expected, according to law enforcement authorities.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
Although causing problems, authorities noted that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - cigarettes from Belarus - are nothing new in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
Since January, over five hundred weather devices have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been recorded last year.
Regional Consequences
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has recorded more than 100 cases in which illegal goods were transported from its neighbor using the meteorological equipment.
Criminal Methodology
In response to questions about why criminals use a technique that proves especially affected by weather factors rather than simpler to operate drones, representatives elaborated that "Meteorological balloons are simple mechanisms used by contraband transporters - they are cheaper than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Officials added that "The objective of our agencies is to seize the largest possible amounts of illegal goods and to detain organisers and involved individuals so that these practices become not financially viable and present no risk to passenger aircraft."
Regional Security Context
The recent incidents occur during a period of heightened tension in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have created aviation problems across the continent.
Parallel situations in nearby states have led European authorities to speed up talks about strengthening air defences throughout European airspace.
